2019 May 21 - Visit to Angels Care
|
Lunch at Scotbrough on way home |
At this years Australia Day/Waitangi Day/AGM ANZAKZN made a donation to Angels Care. Angels Care was this years selected charity. On the 21st May several committee members (Gina Marder, Robyn Geisler, Glenda Dee and Bert Tuhi) traveled to Sizela, courtesy of Bert, to visit the Angels Care Centre to appreciate the facility that provides accommodation for their 55 residents. The donation from ANZA assisted in providing an ablution block that made life better than having to previously cope with just one toilet. Committee members kindly provided surplus clothing that was appreciated by the residents.

2019 April 25 - ANZAC Day
The ANZAC Day commemorative service was once again hosted by the Natal Mounted Rifles at their home site where ANZA KZN a commemorative plaque at NMR's Memorial Wall. Once again the Reverend Clive Jacobsen provided a moving dedication and service. Many wreaths and crosses were laid by both local military entities, both Australian and New Zealand High Commissions and citizens.

After the formalities a less formal than in the past light meal consisting of Braai packs were provided by our resident caterer Bert Tuhi.
Thanks to the on site Boot and Spur Club the Boma and Bar were made available for the event.
Thanks to the Officers of NMR for coordinating the logistics for this event.

2019 January 27 - Australia Day and Waitangi Day
This annual event has always been popular and on this occasion we had what is believed to be an all time record attendance. The Northlands Bowling Club hosted the event with excellent facilities such as a large hall, fully covered veranda, club bar with reasonable prices, essentially an all weather venue.
Traditionally a spit Braai buffet meal is served with salads and garlic bread followed by Pavlova dessert and ice cream.
On this occasion our caterer, Bert Tuhi, did us proud. Bert is a fairly new member of ANZA who is a qualified butcher with 20 years experience in South Africa before becoming a full time Spit Braai / Hangi caterer.
It was as usual a family event and several youngsters seem to be fully content with the venue.
Any feedback from those who attended it will be posted here.

2018 April 25 - ANZAC Day
On this occasion the ANZA Committee chose to have a less formal phase after the Memorial Service by downgrading the dinner menu to make it less expensive and to reduce the formality of the speeches.
The memorial Service at NMR's Wall of Remembrance was conducted by the Reverend Clive Jacobsen and as in the past the Reverend did his advanced research to provide historic detail as he has always done. Thank you Reverend.
This year we were honoured to have eThekwini Deputy Madam Mayor Fawzia Peer to lay a wreath on behalf of the eThekwini Municipality.
Two representatives of the Australian High Commission in Pretoria, Tracey Wunder (Regional Consular Officer) and Kate Jeffs (Senior Administration Officer and Consul) together laid a wreath on behalf of the Australian Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Kate and Tracey mixed well, chatted with all and sundry and were perfect ambassadors for the Australian High Commission. It was a pleasure to have them with us.
Many dignitaries, members and guests then moved to the NMR Officer's Mess for drinks and those who chose to stay for the dinner where then piped into the Dixie Adams Hall where a serve yourself choice of food was provided.
The two dishes to choose from consisted of a Mild curried Thai green chicken and a spaghetti bolognaise. A choice of delightful salads prepared by ladies from the ANZA committee were included. These girls know there stuff! Been there and done that.
.
Great quality, good value and more than enough quantity. Probably set a new benchmark for future ANZAC Day dinners. Thanks to Catering Supreme (031 205 3584)

2018 April 15 - The Bring and Braai was not to happen - or was it?
Due to really bad weather the previous day the Springside Nature Reserve was not habitable
On the eve of this event the feedback from site was that heavy rain made the site a quagmire and with a rapid phone around by Eleanor Brosnihan and Robyn Geisler offering her home as an alternative it all came together.
The event became a winner. What a lovely home in a magic garden that was the perfect option and a big thank you to Robyn the perfect host.
Totally informal with 17 members and guests.
Look forward to having snapshots being offered to give credence for the accolades above that are difficult to believe without the appropriate.imagery.

2018 January 28 - Australia and Waitangi Day
Joint celebration of Australia Day 26 Jan and New Zealand's Waitangi Day 6 Feb.
Probably one of the best supported events in recent times. 85 members, guests and very welcome visitors attended.
Once again it was held at the Northlands Bowling Club and our regular Braai master Hans provided a feast of spit braai gammon and beef. Our committee ladies once again came up tops with salads, potato bake and several Pavlova deserts claimed to be traditionaly and uniquely originating in New Zealand or Australias. The jury is out and it was also claimed on the day that Pavlova was a British desert. Does it matter? NO. Ms Pavlova visited all three countries and no doubt more countries and left HER recipe in each.
We welcomed both Monique Bray as a new member who is a Restaurateur and is keen to work with assist Bert Tuie in reintroducing the Hangi in the near future. Bert is renown as a master Hangi man and is also our go to man when Australian and New Zealand Rugby teams come to Durban. Last year Bert arranged for 18 of the Melbourne Rebels to join us at our ANZAC Day memorial service at Natal Mounted Rifles Headquarters in Durban.

2017 October 29 - German Food Festival
This is a clone of a very popular German Bierfest that has always been popular. It doubles up as one of our few fund raisers.
Recently we have not had any significant fund raisers and that makes it difficult to support some worthy charitable organisations.
This year the event was held at the Beachwood Mangrove Swamps as this venue has features that suit our needs admirably.
The format of the event.
ANZA Members and guests are asked to bring an item of value that they longer need and such items are auctioned.
An entrance fee includes a typical German meal that includes Kessler chops, several German sausages sauerkraut and potato salad. Participating visitors bring there own beverages chairs, picnic tables etc.
The event succeeded its objective in that it was thoroughly enjoyable and raised enough funds to assist this years nominated charity,
Roots
We were fortunate have a relatively new member who stepped in to manage the auction with a mixture of laughter and an ability to extort maximum bids painlessly from a captive audience. Ross Hoole.

Our Secretary Glenda Dee accompanied by her husband Peter represented ANZA by layiny a wreath at the Durban Cenotaph.
The actual date of the original Armistice Day is 11th November. Each year on this day in both New Zealand and Australia all public transport comes to a standstill at 11am in memory of all the Allies who lost their lives in World War II. _______________________________________________________
