Australian Soldiers Lament 1941, Egypt
Observed at Natal Mounted Rifles Officer's Mess.
" Land of the Pharoahs Egypt 1941
Land of heat and sweaty socks.
Sun and sand and loads of pox.
Streets of filth, streets of shame.
Streets to which we give no name.
Harlots, thieves, pestering wogs.
Gyppo guts and camels meat.
Clouds of choking sand that blinds.
Drives poor fellows off their minds.
Arab's heaven. Soldier's hell.
Land of bastards fare thee well."
