Australia's Memorial Walk

Whilst visiting Australia recently for a family reunion and birthday celebrations, Kraft and Pam von Aulock visited the relatively new "Australia's Memorial Walk" situated on North Head overlooking the Sydney Harbour.

Just a few images follow.

AGM 2015 (continued)

Sunday's AGM was something special. Our 80th anniversary. It was held at the Royal Durban Yacht Club on the edge of the harbour. We have had our AGM here for several successive years and the buffet lunch has been something very special.

The meeting ran smoothly and there were no nominations other than existing members and as such no change though Chris Wilson has resigned due to his imminent departure to New Zealand.

Chris was our last President who really worked hard to help make ANZA such a great place to hang out in Durban.

We wish Chris and Pippa a safe trip and the very best for their future in the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Every year ANZA donates funds to a charity that is chosen out of a short list of possible recipients.

This year the committee chose the Durban branch of CHOC.
Special Guests today were Bobby Freeman( Regimental Sergeant  Major, Natal Mounted rifles and his wife Pat  and Agie Govender, Regional Manager of CHOC.

Subject: Wearing the Poppy

"Fellow Legionnaires & friends of the Legion.
If you’re already doing so, that’s great… but in case not, please may I remind you that, wherever practical, you’re expected to “Wear your Poppy with Pride”, daily at least until Remembrance Day - i.e. Wednesday, November 11th.
Kindly refer to the attached story of the Poppy, which I’m sure you’ll find of some interest.
Thank you.
Regards,
Rick

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM"

HOW ‘THE FLOWER OF FORGETFULNESS’
BECAME ‘THE FLOWER OF REMEMBRANCE’
History relates that out of the land of the white poppy, came Genghis Khan in the wake of the Great Khan’s bloodthirsty warriors, wherever the blood of man was spilled, the seeds of the “flower of forgetfulness” (the opium poppy) budded in full flower.
Now, huge transformation has turned blood red and in the center of each flower was outlined a cross, as though Nature herself was crying in protest at the wanton slaughter during both world wars.  On battlefields which before had been bare wastes, there sprang up the poppy, it’s symbol carpeting the graves of men who died.

Capt John McCrae, a Canadian medical officer, experienced the carnage and destruction of the First World War on the Western Front.  Torn by the misery of war and confronted with the dead and wounded being part of his everyday life as a surgeon, he wrote his celebrated poem “In Flanders Fields”.  This poem bought him fame in and beyond the British Empire.  This poem was written on 3 May 1915 on a slip of paper from his dispatch book:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields

This poem was published by “Punch” anonymously on 8 December 1915.  It was a success and soldiers copied it, quoted it and discussed it in the trenches.  The poem became a source of strength and determination.

Why did this poem have such an impact on soldiers and later military veterans?

The latest newsletter contains lots of useful information about ANZA, past events and upcoming events. This year represents 80 years since inauguration. To our best knowledge only Canada matches this time span.

It would be great if many younger potential members were to join and expand the range of events to give us a broader appeal to all eligible members in KwaZulu-Natal.

At R60-00 per year membership you can't really afford not being a member.

Current Advice Level: "High degree of caution"
Change Summary:
On 8 September 2015, the US Government warned its citizens of information that extremists may be targeting US interests in South Africa, possibly including US Government facilities and other facilities with identifiable US business interests. Australians in South Africa should consider this information when planning their activities and take appropriate steps to enhance their personal security. The level of this advice has not changed.  We continue to advise Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa.

  • There have been demonstrations and targeted violence between taxi and Uber drivers in Johannesburg, and taxi drivers and bus service operators in Mamelodi, Pretoria. You should avoid any areas where violence is taking place, and monitor local media for updates on the situation. See Safety and security.
  • From 1 June 2015, parents and guardians will need to carry, and produce on request, a full (unabridged) birth certificate as well as a valid travel document (passport) for children under the age of 18. There are additional conditions for minors travelling with only one parent or unaccompanied, see Entry and exit.
  • There have been reports of race-related violence in the villages of Kwa Mushu and Umlazi in Kwa-Zulu Natal, and in the central business districts of Durban and Johannesburg. See Safety and security.
  • There has been an increase in the number of robberies at shopping centres in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria. While these have been mostly non-violent, visitors to big malls should remain vigilant at all times.
  • The rate of HIV/AIDS infection in South Africa is very high. You should exercise appropriate precautions if engaging in activities that expose you to risk of infection.
  • See Travel Smart for general advice for all travellers.
  • Be a smart traveller. Before heading overseas:

ANZA Event for August Rescheduled for 20th September

Go to Future Events Menu for revised status

The  Hangi scheduled for August has been delayed as we are trying to source a way of heating the steel used to cook the food without having a huge fire as in the past.  The event has always had an excellent following and is certainly not cancelled.

Update 5 August 2015 - Late September is  the planned time to get the Hangi scheduled.  The committee is working on a potentially viable method of heating the steel plates used to cook the food.

The original bonfire method is considered dangerous.  As soon as a firm date and details are in place the event will become finalised and published.

Health Warning about Avian Influenza

The following article was supplied by the the Australian High Commission (today)

Health: Avian Influenza

Latest update

This Bulletin was last issued on Tuesday, 28 July 2015.

Summary

  • Avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and rarely causes infections in humans and other mammals.
  • Since 2003, more than 800 confirmed cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) have been reported in 16 countries. Of these cases, over 400 have died.
  • Since 2013, Chinese authorities have confirmed human cases of avian influenza (H7N9) infection in China.
  • The risk of human infections is low and there is no reason to defer travel to a country affected by avian influenza.
  • Human cases of avian influenza occur as a result of exposure to infected birds, usually domestic poultry. There is currently no evidence of ongoing, efficient or sustained spread of avian influenza from person to person.

Avian influenza amongst humans

Since November 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed more than 800 human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) in Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada China, Djibouti, Egypt, Indonesia (including Bali), Iraq, Laos, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. The WHO has confirmed more than 400 deaths from this disease. A large number of cases were reported in late 2014 and 2015 in Egypt.
Chinese authorities have confirmed cases in humans of avian influenza A (H7N9) in China since 2013, causing over 270 deaths For more information on strain (H7N9) avian influenza see the websites of the Australian Department of Health and the World Health Organisation.
The WHO has not advised against travel to any affected country. Current information on human health risks from avian influenza can be found on the WHO website.

MERS-CoV

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV)

Latest update

This Bulletin was last issued on Tuesday, 23 June 2015.
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory illness that was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and has since been identified in other Middle Eastern countries such as Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
Other countries have reported imported cases of MERS from arriving travellers. All cases have either lived in or travelled to affected countries, had close contact with travellers returning from affected parts of the Middle East or can be linked to further limited spread from an imported case. These countries include Algeria, Austria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States.
There have been no cases in Australia to date.
Since May 2015, a number of cases of MERS have been reported in the Republic of Korea.
Regional countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand, have implemented special screening arrangements at international airports.

What are the symptoms and who is at risk?

MERS can cause a rapid onset of severe respiratory illness with a fatality rate of around 30%. There is no vaccine to protect against MERS. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Some patients have reported a variety of other symptoms, including muscle pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and nausea. Some patients have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic. MERS can affect anyone, though severe cases have most frequently occurred in people with underlying conditions that may have made them more susceptible to infection (including diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, asthma and lung diseases, cancer, cardiovascular disease).
You should seek immediate medical attention if you feel unwell with symptoms similar to MERS while travelling or on your return to Australia. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider that you have travelled to a region where MERS is known to occur.

Reducing the risk of exposure

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for MERS currently available. Person-to-person transmission of MERS has been documented in healthcare settings. Travellers should exercise good hygiene practices including:
• regularly washing hands with soap, particularly in affected areas where camels are present,
• avoiding touching the nose, eyes and mouth with unwashed hands,
• avoiding close contact with people displaying flu-like symptoms and,
• using hand sanitiser if soap and water is not available.
Many human cases of MERS have been attributed to person-to-person infections, but camels are likely to be a source of MERS infection in humans. However, the exact role of camels in transmission of the virus is unknown. People with underlying illnesses, such as diabetes, renal failure, chronic lung disease, or other immunocompromising conditions, may be at a higher risk of severe disease due to MERS. People travelling to the Middle East who have underlying illnesses should avoid visiting farms and markets where camels might be present.

Loadshedding

Most in eThekwini will have a load-shedding schedule that Municipality sends with your Account. Those who get billed direct from Eskom will also get a schedule. These are updated from time to time. It seems that the current Phase is a National determination. i.e. All areas on Phase 1 together.

However the Phase can change unexpectedly during the currency of your schedule.
Suggested procedure would be to check your schedule and about 15 minutes before it takes effect visit http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za to see which Phase is current or if in fact if there is load-shedding at all.

Airline Lunches

Submitted by Chris Wilson  from a rowing friend, Howard Whitehead, in Durban

Airline  Lunches
I put my  carry-on in the luggage
compartment  and sat down in my
assigned  seat.
It  was  going to be a long flight from Perth .
"I'm glad  I have a good book to read.
Perhaps I  will even get a short sleep." I thought.

Just  before take-off, a line of  diggers
came down  the aisle and filled all the vacant  seats,
 totally  surrounding me.

I decided  to start a conversation.
"Where are  you blokes headed?" I asked the
Digger seated  nearest to me.
"Puckapunyal. We'll be there  for two weeks
for  special training, and then we're being deployed  to Afghanistan."

After  flying for about an hour,
 an  announcement was made that
lunches were  available for five dollars.
 It would  be several
hours before we reached Melbourne,
and I  quickly decided a lunch would
help pass the  time.

As I reached for my  wallet,
I  overheard a soldier ask his mate if
he  planned to buy lunch.
"No, that  seems like a lot of money for
just an airline  lunch.
Probably   wouldn't be worth five bucks.
I'll wait  till we get to Pucka."
His  mate agreed.

I looked around at the other  soldiers.
 None were  buying lunch.
I walked to the back of the  plane
and handed  the flight attendant a
Fifty dollar  note.
"Take a  lunch to all those soldiers."
She  grabbed my arms and squeezed  tightly.

  Her eyes  wet with tears,
 she  thanked me.
"My young  bloke was a digger in Iraq.
It's  almost like you are doing it for  him."
 Picking up  ten lunchboxes,
she headed  up the aisle to where the
Digs were  seated.
She  stopped at my seat and asked,
 "Which do  you
like best - beef or  chicken?'"
"Chicken." I replied,  wondering
 why she  asked.

She  turned and went to the front  of plane,  returning a minute
later with a dinner plate  from first class.
 "This is  your thanks."

After we finished  eating,
I went  again to the back of the plane,
heading   for the rest room.
 An old  bloke stopped me.
 "I saw  what you did.
I want to  be part of it.
 Here, take  this."
 He handed  me twenty-five
Dollars..

Soon after  I returned to my seat,
 I saw the  Captain coming
Down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked.
I hoped he  wasn't looking  for me,
but  noticed he was looking at the numbers
only on  my side of the plane.
When he got to my row he stopped,  smiled,
held out his hand, and  said,
"I want to  shake your hand.'"
Quickly unfastening my  seat-belt I stood  and took the Captain's hand.
With a  booming voice he said, "I was an  army pilot a long time back.
 Once  someone bought me lunch.
It was an  act of kindness I never  forgot."
 I was  embarrassed when applause
was heard  from all of the passengers.

Later  I walked to the front of the  plane
so I could  stretch my legs.
A kid who  looked about 18 was sitting  about
six rows  in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to  shake mine.
 He left  another twenty-five dollars
in my  palm.

When we landed I gathered  my belongings  and started to depart.
Waiting just inside  the aeroplane door was a man who stopped me,  put
something in my shirt pocket, turned, and  walked away without saying a word.
Another  twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the  terminal,
I saw the  soldiers gathering for their
trip to up to  Puckapunyal.
I walked  over to them and handed
 them  seventy-five dollars.
"It will  take you some time to
 reach  Pucka. It will be
about time for a  sandwich.
 God Bless  You Blokes."
Ten young  blokes left that flight feeling
the love  and respect of their fellow  Aussies.
As  I walked briskly to my car,
I  whispered a prayer for their safe  return.  These soldiers were
giving  their all for our country.
I could  only give them a couple of meals.
It  seemed so little ....

A digger  is someone who,
at one  point in his life, wrote a blank
cheque made  payable to
 'AUSTRALIA'
 for an  amount of
"up to and including my  life."

That is Honour, and there are  way
too many  foreigners in this country
 who don't  understand it.

May you  have the strength and
courage to  pass this along to
everyone  on your email mates list ..

I JUST   DID!
 LEST   WE  FORGET!

Thanks Chris,
I just felt I should add this image. - Andy

ANZAC Memorial plaque
The Australia and New Zealand Association in KwaZulu-Natal was granted permission to fix a memorial plaque honoring the ANZAC's on NMR's Memorial Wall.

Being the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC Day it is fitting to acknowledge that Turkey has done an exceptional job in maintaining all the relevant memorial sites and cemeteries relating to this event.
Due to the large numbers wishing to attend the dawn service at Gallipoli both Australia and New Zealand had to hold a ballot to keep the numbers manageable. Thousands who were not lucky in the ballot chose to go anyway and will be visiting the various sites pertaining to the memorable event.
"18 pounder" refurbished

The gun
1. The 18 pounder gun with six horses  will lead the ANZAC Day ceremony at the National War Memorial in Canberra this coming Saturday. Submitted by Rory.

2. This gun had a rapid fire system allowing it to fire 18lb shells at a phenomenal rate.
It was totally refurbished over several years and was towed by 6 horses at this years ANZAC march to the National War Memorial in Canberra this year.

Current Travel Alert from the Australian Dept. of Foreign Affairs and Trade.(dfat) - 17 april 2015

The following bulletin was copied from an incoming travel advice sent to subscribers of the services provided by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - see reference for this bulletin below.

"Crime

Muggings, rape, armed robbery and other forms of theft are common. Murders and carjackings involving foreign tourists have also been reported. Travellers have been robbed and assaulted after having their food or drinks spiked.
The South African Police Service does not have “Tourist Police”. Criminals, however, have posed as “Tourist Police” to extort and rob tourists, including by stopping tourists buses to check proof of identity and search luggage.
There has been an increase in the number of robberies at shopping centres in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria. While these have been mostly non-violent, visitors to big malls should remain vigilant at all times.
Crime rates are significantly higher after dark in the centres of major cities and in township areas. The inner suburbs of Johannesburg (Berea and Hillbrow) and the beachfront in Durban are particularly prone to crime and you should avoid travelling to these areas. As crime rates are generally high in the townships, you should only visit township areas with an organised tour run by a reputable company. You should also avoid isolated beaches, lookouts and picnic areas.
Due to the very high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, victims of violent crime, especially rape, are strongly encouraged to seek immediate medical assistance.
When travelling by car, you should keep the doors locked, the windows up and valuables out of sight. Thieves posing as vendors or beggars target cars on highway off ramps, stopped at intersections and at traffic lights. Criminals can place debris on roads to stop vehicles. You should not stop to clear debris off the road.
Valuables such as cameras, mobile phones and jewellery should be kept out of sight, and you should exercise vigilance in public places. Bags and backpacks have been stolen in public places including restaurants and bars.
There is a luggage theft problem at Johannesburg and Cape Town airports. Use an airport plastic wrapping service when available and avoid placing electronics, jewellery, cameras and other valuables into checked luggage.
Theft from hotel rooms and guest homes is common, including within game parks.. Luggage and valuables should never be left unattended and should be placed in safekeeping facilities.
Criminals operate out of the airport in Johannesburg, following some overseas visitors to their accommodation and robbing them. We advise against accepting unsolicited assistance with transport when arriving at the airport in Johannesburg. Assaults and robberies have also taken place on local commuter and metro trains between Johannesburg and Pretoria, as well as on commuter trains in Cape Town.
Hikers have been attacked on tracks on the slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town. We recommend you walk in groups and do not carry valuables.
Commercial fraud scams are common in South Africa. If you receive a scam message, don't be fooled: if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Our information on international scams provides details on common commercial fraud scams. If you are a victim of a scam you should not travel to South Africa to seek restitution given the risk of physical assault from the perpetrators of such crimes. Fraud incidents may be reported to the Commercial Crimes Unit of the South African Police Service in Johannesburg, telephone +27 11 970 5300.
Bogus internet friendship, dating and marriage schemes are operating from some African countries. These scams typically result from connections made through internet dating schemes or chat rooms. Once a virtual friendship develops, the Australian citizen may be asked by their friend or prospective marriage partner to send money to enable travel to Australia. In some cases the relationship is terminated with very little chance that any funds can be recovered. In other cases, foreigners may be lured to Africa to meet their friend or prospective marriage partner and can become victims of crime including kidnapping, assault and robbery.

Is Food branded Australian actually Australian?

In Australia If you grow fruit and veggies yourself there is fair chance it is Australian by definition.  If however you buy products in major retail stores then be aware that if is labelled as Australian it might just be that it is fish caught in the Atlantic Ocean by Taiwanese fishermen in Taiwanese fishing boats that is then shipped to Taiwan, part processed then shipped to New Zealand for final processing before being shipped to Australia for packaging labelling and distribution to local retailers.  To legally qualify as an Australian product it simply has to be shown that the total cost in getting it to the end user was more than 50% Australian expense!

Stone fruit grown in an unhealthy environment with highly polluted water in China declared unfit in China for Chinese consumption caused several Australians to be inflicted with Hepatitis A.  Those in the supply chain did not seem to check that is was a health risk because it was labelled "Australian" made.

This info was sourced from live radio from 2GB in Sydney Yesterday. (On any PC with Internet simply link to 2gb.com and select "Listen Live".)  2GB is a 24/7 talk a back show that is not scared to speak out when appropriate and yet balanced with humour, praise and criticism.

I promise that the next post I submit will be positive!

Here it is!  New Zealand has won all of it's first 4 cricket matches at the ICC World Cup comfortably and that includes beating Australia.

The February 2015 Function Celebrating Australia Day (26 January) and Waitangi Day (6th February)

Dave Brosihan at work
Today the Australia and New Zealand Association celebrated both Waitangi Day and Australia
Day at the Northlands Bowling Club in Durban with a Spit Braai (BBQ). At this function there were short talks on the history of both these special days.

The historical information was gleaned for the most part from the following two links:

 http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics/treaty/waitangi-day

 http://www.australiaday.org.au/australia-day/history/
It is noted that both these days have experienced some degree of controversy over time.

At both of these linked sites one can read the information by clicking onto a chronological list of headings.

The next scheduled function will be a wreath laying memorial event celebrating the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC Day, 25th April 2015 at the Natal Mounted Rifles (NMR) Headquarters in Durban followed by dinner at the NMR

ANZA CLUB - Canada

Recently ANZA-KZN members were discussing the fact that we had very little knowledge of similar associations.   For something different the following is a brief history of the Anza Club in Vancouver, Canada.

" History
Founded in 1935, the Australia-New Zealand Association was formed, with the purpose to
meet and welcome visitors from down under, and gather together socially from time to time. ANZA continued their meet & greet, and social functions throughout the years, until the flow of visitors ceased due to travel restrictions brought on by the start of World War Two.
In 1952 the ANZA was revived but the nature of ANZA changed, and it became primarily a Social Club for Australians & New Zealanders living in the Greater Vancouver area, holding regular monthly dances/ socials at HMCS Discovery in Stanley Park. These proved so popular that they were increased to twice monthly, and ANZA introduced their Annual Picnic, and held very successful Annual Garden Parties.
With such rapid growth, it was decided by the Members that ANZA should get its own premises, where all records could be stored, work performed and activities held. In May 1961, during the reign of two-time, eight year President Graeme Robson, a Clubhouse fund was started.
After scouring the city, it was finally decided that ANZA would purchase the property that we currently occupy at 3 West 8th Avenue. After two years of alterations, renovations and acquisitions all of the many City, Fire and Liquor regulations were finally met and the club was finally granted a liquor license by the LCB.
The club now began to flourish. With ANZA Travel a part of the family, discounted flights/travel to Oz and NZ were a big bonus to members, and membership numbers increased astronomically. Bi-monthly socials became weekly, then twice-weekly. If you weren’t here by 7:30, you probably wouldn’t get in. Participation, special event groups, attendance, theme nights, The ANZA Players, Anzettes, Bar-B-Qs, Bowling, Bridge, the Camera Club, Car Rallies, Darts, Golf, Hiking, Picnics, Rugby, a Softball Team, and the Ski Club. The Ski Club proved so successful that the club purchased two ski chalets at Snowline on Mt. Baker.
As the nature of travel changed, and the group flight discount incentive declined, so did ANZA attendance. Most, if not all, of the original founding members married and started raising children, and while there were enthusiastic successors, they were fewer in number. The ski chalets were sold to keep the club afloat.
While the ANZA had always been sort of a family social venue, the turn of the century saw a sort of generational torch pass. The ANZA began to attract a couple of distinct new crowds. There came a night club kind of crowd, particularly on the weekends. The Pacific Bluegrass Society took up Monday night residence in the upstairs hall.

The ANZA has evolved into a sort of neighbourhood institution – much likely the British “local”. The Tiki lounge in the downstairs part of the building is now a longstanding home to weekly events such as Dart league, Open Mic and Psych Night, all very popular with Mt. Pleasant folk. "
